The Midwives College of Utah is proud to offer you an enriching and brand new conference experience: Birthing Excellence: Conference & Skill Suites by MCU! Our conference is designed to help you focus on mastering midwifery skills through hands-on training and feedback from experts in the field. Curated by MCU’s clinical experts, our conference is organized by skill level and skill sets informed by both the PSGM skills guidelines and MEAC clinical competencies.

Our skill suite instructors are all preceptors trained and approved by MEAC. Topics are broken down into different skill categories allowing you to focus on the skills that best serve you.

Learn and practice the basics of IV placement. Skills listed here will be taught, practiced and evaluated in the workshop. Students who show competency in the skills can have them “signed off” by the instructor in the PSGM if desired.

Assessment in focus: Pelvic Exams/Paps & STI Testing

Appropriate for Phase 2 (assist-level clinical) and beyond

Learn best practices for reproductive organ and bladder care, including pap spears, gynecological cultures, bladder catheterization, STI screening, pelvimetry and microscope analysis of vaginal smears. Some of these are pregnancy related, and some are more commonly done outside pregnancy. Skills listed here may be taught, practiced and evaluated in the workshop. Students who show competency in the skills can have them “signed off” by the instructor in the PSGM if desired.

Screening for Postpartum Mood Disorders

In this two-hour session, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of identifying, assessing, and supporting individuals experiencing postpartum mood disorders (PPMD), including types of mood disorders, commonly used screening tools, risk factors and warning signs, communication with clients, collaborating with mental health professionals, and self-care for birthworkers

Assessment in focus: Physical Exams for all ages

Appropriate for Phase 2 (assist-level clinical) and beyond

This hands-on workshop will prepare students to perform a complete physical exam of an adult (except pelvic exam) or newborn. Skills listed here may be reviewed, practiced and evaluated in the workshop. Students who show competency in the adult exam skills can have them “signed off” by the instructor in the MCU Skills Competencies checklist or in the PSGM if desired (note: newborn physical exam skills cannot be signed off via this workshop).

Midwife’s Assistant

Appropriate for all phases

Midwife’s Assistant Skill Suite is a workshop specifically designed to introduce the attendee to the skills, knowledge, and practices needed to assist a midwife, birthing persons, and babies. The course will focus on a safe birthing environment, hands-on skills of a midwife’s assistant, as well as an introduction to HIPAA guidelines. Whether you’re considering becoming a midwife, are a doula interested in expanding your support to midwife assisting, or just looking to explore the field, sign up today. Skill taught may include:

Assessment in Focus: Labor & Birth Complications Instruction

But what if something goes wrong at the birth? Parents ask it, and midwives and student midwives want to be ready to handle complications. Make sure you’re prepared for managing shoulder dystocia, nuchal hand or cord, abnormal fetal heart tones, vaginal bleeding in labor, abdominal pain in labor, cord prolapse, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, and other unexpected events in this intensive, hands-on workshop.

Healthy Newborn with Screening

Appropriate for Phase 2 (assist-level clinical) and beyond

Caring for babies is fun! This hands-on workshop goes over newborn exams (initial and routine) as well as gestational age assessment, newborn reflexes, metabolic screening and other newborn procedures. Skills listed here may be taught, practiced and evaluated in the workshop. Students who show competency in the skills can have them “signed off” by the instructor in the PSGM if desired.

Postpartum Complications

Appropriate for Phase 3 (primary students) and practicing midwives

What are you prepared for after the baby is born? Postpartum hemorrhage, shock, and retained placenta are covered in this hands-on workshop to make sure you’ll be ready. Herbology

Appropriate for all skill levels. This course will take place at a different location.

This Skill Suites workshop is a hands-on approach to Herbology and birth work. The course provides an introduction to herbs for their healing power and uses in birthwork, making salves, tinctures and oils. Learn new skills, improve your botanical knowledge and support both your wellness and your clients! This course will partially take place outside and will involve making your own herbal formulations to take home. Please be prepared with proper footwear and weather appropriate attire/gear!

WHAT TO EXPECT: This fun and interactive class is variable in length, depending on number of participants, level of experience, and need for in-class review. I will cover current and controversial issues, site-specific considerations, and other related topics. We will review the book and cover any questions you may have after your own review prior to class. We will then practice the skills of resuscitation on day 2, until you are proficient, prior to checking off on your skills.

CEUS: 6.5 MEAC credit hours are available for $25 (payable on venmo to @marijkevanroojen), in addition to the NRP card.

ONLINE  EXAMINATION: You will need to take the ADVANCED online exam before

the class for the new 8 th edition of the NRP course with RQI Partners.

The cost of this exam goes directly to RQI partners and is $45.00.

Ceremony in the Childbearing Year

Based on current research on ceremony in the childbearing year, this workshop will combine a presentation of research content with an interactive workshop inviting participants to explore the material presented in small groups to engage with it and develop understanding
and working knowledge of how to create ceremony for themselves. Content will include exploring research on current antenatal ceremonies in the United States and why ceremony matters to human well-being, as well as common denominators in ceremony that are found in the literature. Cultural appropriation versus appropriate cultural sharing will be discussed and
participants will practice creating a personalized ceremony around the childbearing years.

Birth Doula Training Day 1

Appropriate for all skill levels. Must attend all 3 days to receive certification.

This intensive three-day workshop will help the participant:

  • Recognize the significance of childbirth in the life of a birthing person.
  • Demonstrate at least three prenatal and postpartum support skills.
  • Devise a plan to offer optimal support in a variety of labor situations.
  • Appraise personal values and their relationship to labor support.
  • Assess standards of practice and plan methods of business management.

This course offers the expertise of one of the leading doula trainers in the country. Kristi has trained over 2200 doulas throughout the world and will use years of experience, supplementary text, videos, hands-on practice, and role-play to teach the theory and practical skills of offering spiritual, physical, mental and emotional support to birthing families. A complete syllabus is included with the course. This training comprises one step in the certification process for Doulas of North America (DONA).

This workshop covers basic suturing skills, evaluation of perineal lacerations, administration of local anesthetic, instrument knot-tying, and how to perform basic first and second degree perineal laceration repairs. You will have the opportunity to practice using key suturing instruments. You will perform simulations of first- and second-degree perineal repairs, as well as labial repairs. Skills listed below will be taught, practiced and evaluated in the workshop. Students who show competency in the skills can have them “signed off” by the instructor in the PSGM or on the MCU Skills Competencies list if desired.
